As I've said on this list before, I've been having
some weird problems with X. :)
But some things seemed to have changed under 2.1.86
from previous kernels:
1) Netscape often pauses for a while for no apparent
reason, where it doesn't do any screen refreshes/redraws
etc. anymore. This happens even if the only thing running
of consequence is Netscape and vi (in an xterm).
2) When I switched from X to a vt, then back to X, the
console used to go blank and reboot the system after a
short while (no Magic SysRq, console-switching, nada).
Now, it actually shows me the X screen (albeit with a bit
of "snowing".). When I tried it again, it locked up the
moment I switched back to X.
3) Gimp also shows the same "freezing" as Netscape.
Under 2.1.84, I noticed that while selecting a new font
under the text tool, the system would appear to "freeze" and refuse
all input (including Magic SysRq) no matter how long I waited.
However, if I kept moving the mouse around, after about 5
seconds or so, the system would become "unstuck".
I'm currently running 2.1.86 compiled with gcc 2.7.2.3, with
glibc 2.0.6c. Netscape = Communicator, gimp = 0.99.15, X = XFree86
v 3.3.1 and X server = XF86_S3V, compiled against glibc 2.0.x.
I'm starting to think I might have a kernel problem here
instead of an X or hardware problem, but I'm not really that good at
figuring it out. Anyone have suggestions for me so I can narrow it
down?
