I'm also blessed with IDE disks, and have seen the flow of data over
telnet, SSH, and HTTP connections (via PPP) stop while the disks are busy.
The RD light on my modem flickers for a little while, but the programs I'm
using act like they've not received anything. While this is happening,
pinging the remote hosts gives normal results. This has been the case for
the past few revisions of the kernel, roughly since 2.1.80.
