With ARCH=i386 and CONFIG_SMP not set, I get the same compilation warnings
as with plain 2.1.86. The resulting kernel boots and runs okay for me,
and I found nothing objectionable in a quick reading of your patch. I'd
like to see this (or something like it) in the mainstream kernel.
