Nfs Problem

I just switched from 2.0.33 to 2.1.82 and am getting problems
with high NFS traffic causing the machine to hang. When it boots and
begins to mount the nfs drive I get the following

portmap RPC call returned error 111
RPC: task of released request still queued
RPC: task in on xprt_pending
lockd_up: no pid, users ??

I am not using the kernel nfs server but nfsd instead, I have tried
to update to the latest tcip tools from the latest slakware which
got rid of a 'mount older than kernel warning'. I have updated all
the versions of packages listeded in Documentation/Changes that
seemed relevant.

Unfortunately I do not understand enough about unix to know exactly
what the above error message means. Any help would be appreciated.
