Since, for whatever reasons, this is the only sound driver to be found
in the kernel, one must make due. I finally gave up on the documentation
once I realised that, other than suggesting I buy OSS/Linux, it was
useless. I should have resorted to the code first; I quickly found out
that the sb module takes args, and won't work without them. Note
especially the "dma16=5"; without that I got sound, but extremely noisy
and distorted sound.
Adding the following lines to /etc/conf.modules should help users of
SB16 cards who would like to save about 300k of gzipped kernel size
(meaning perhaps a meg of wired ram?) make the thing as a module and
actually have kerneld be able to load it if one, for example, runs
rvplayer, then unload when finished.
alias char-major-14 sb
alias sound sb
options sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
I still have had no success trying to get MIDI stuff playing. I take the
liberty of including my /dev/sndstat output in case someone else has been
thru this. I think I need a synth device, but none is spontaneosly
generating. I have tried both with and without the MIDI loopback device,
which xconfig informs me has no help available.
