Crazy modules names still in 2.1.84!

I've successfully compiled kernel 2.1.84, and I am atill get errors
like this:
Jan 30 20:51:42 bredelin modprobe: can't locate module ^L2^H@^P-

I thought that this bug was fixed, or at least that a patch was made
available on the list. Am I mistaken?
