2.1.82 lock up

I ran into a lock up by changing directories to /proc/debug and then miss
typing a command. I presume that this caused the path search to include
the current directory /proc/debug. I could swith to a different VC but
the VC would go so far as accepting the password and hang.

2.1.82 does not offer any performance improvements for me when doing a
kernel build, it may be slower (though by little). The machine is a 2 way
P6DOF, 200Mhz 256kL2 P6's, 128MB ram. According to /proc/interrupts, all
interrupts occur on processor 0. My kernel boot messages are difficult
to capture on account of mounting root on a soft raid, the one that seemed
important is "IO-APIC cannot route PCI PIRQ 0-3" (copied from screen).
