swap= and buff= kernel command options

Hello,
While browsing around the source code to 2.0.33 (use the source,
luke!) I found in swap.c something about "Parse the kernel command line
option swap=" and later something about the "kernel command line option
buff=". I would like to know how those options can be used (or can they?)
and if they can somehow be used to optimize the performance of the
system--my 386 w/ 4MB RAM desperately needs a speed boost (kswapd is
already renice'ed to 10, which works wonders already)

I subscribe to the linux-kernel-digest but Cc:'ing me a reply would be
most appreciated.
