VFAT slowdowns under 2.0.x...?

I've been getting some very strange behaviour when mounting and using my
vfat partition under the 2.0.x kernels. (I've tried with x.30, 31, 32.)
Basically, it just runs painfully slow. Simply doing an 'ls' of a
relatively small directory may take a matter of minutes!
I've been running on 2.1.64 for a couple months now. The strange thing
is, I don't recall my vfat drive being THAT slow before. So, perhaps a
system setting has changed? I'm not sure what it could be though. Any
pointers would be much appreciated.
