SMP/LinuxThreads Status

Linux folk,

I saw Peeter (Joot)'s post stating that his patch supporting TIDs,
improved pthreads signal semantics, etc, is not ready to fold in, but
making slow progress. Does this mean that there is now support for
these features among kernel developers? I am hoping so. (I am
interested in working on GDB-doesn't Cygnus maintain GDB for use in GNU
PRO?-and I'd like to know if Peeter's direction is where the kernel is
going.)

Second question: what is status of SMP Linux? I keep hearing that it
is unstable and inefficient, but being redesigned. Is progress being
made on this front?
