The only warning I now receive is the message
Dec 20 11:30:03 maya kernel: diald uses obsolete (AF_INET,SOCK_PACKET)
which is very likely the reason why I find the following on connecting
to my ISP:
pppd[406]: local IP address 207.236.103.56
pppd[406]: remote IP address 207.236.103.12
diald[289]: failed to get ppp local address:
Operation not supported on transport endpoint
diald[289]: failed to get ppp remote address:
Operation not supported on transport endpoint
diald[289]: New addresses: local 0.0.0.0, remote 0.0.0.0.
I have (hopefully) upgraded all the support software (incl pppd) as
recommended in the Changes file and network/ppp.txt, but with the
changes to the socket code, I expect the only possible fix is to patch
diald.
There was word of a patch in circulation for this problem, but I have
been unable to locate this in the linux-kernel archives; if anyone has
a fix or recommendations on paths of investigation, I would be very
interested to hear them.
There is another small glitch in my running of 2.1.7x kernels, and
this is likely just some upgrade I have overlooked. The first messages
to be recorded from the syslogd are as follows:
kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
kernel: Loaded 5745 symbols from /System.map.
kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.1.74.
kernel: Error seeking in /dev/kmem
kernel: Error adding kernel module table entry.
There do not appear to be any adverse effects of this later in the
boot sequence, and until I find a work-around for the diald glitch,
I likely won't be running 2.1.74 enough to discover any other ill
effects. I only really include this in case someone recognizes it
and wants to add the gotcha to the Changes file.
