It is. Here's the results on my system:
seahunt:~# cd /proc
seahunt:/proc# dd if=kcore of=/dev/null
65544+0 records in
65544+0 records out
seahunt:/proc#
No problem, no lockup.
-> But if I'm running the XF86_S3 server
-> (3.3.1), it hard locks my linux box (kernel 2.0.31, on a Pentium, 32M
-> Ram).
I'm running that server under 2.0.33, Pentium 133, 32M RAM.
->
-> here's my X -probeonly, for the record
->
->
-> XFree86 Version 3.3.1 / X Window System
-> (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
-> Release Date: August 4 1997
and the same lines from mine:
XFree86 Version 3.3.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300)
Release Date: August 4 1997
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux 2.0.30 i586 [ELF]
Configured drivers:
S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
newmmio, mmio_928, s3_generic
...so, I don't know what the problem on your system is, but it isn't
the X server.
