It is. Here's the results on my system:

seahunt:~# cd /proc
seahunt:/proc# dd if=kcore of=/dev/null
65544+0 records in
65544+0 records out
seahunt:/proc#

No problem, no lockup.

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is

Configured drivers:
S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
newmmio, mmio_928, s3_generic

...so, I don't know what the problem on your system is, but it isn't
the X server.
