Can I increase NR_TASKS without breaking anything?

I have a box running Linux 2.0.32 that may need to run tons of processes.
Can I change the value of NR_TASKS in include/linux/tasks.h without any
risks? Like setting it to 768 or 1024.

On the same subject is there any documentation explaining the pros and
cons of this kind of kernel hacking? A kind of "Kernel Tuning HOWTO" would
be welcome.
