2.1.72 boot incomplete

I'm having real problems with the 2.1.72 kernel. I can't seem to get it
to boot completely. I've got a Tyan Tomcat IV with 2 P75's and 48MbRAM,.
I compiled the 2.1.72 kernel with the same setup as I have for 2.1.66
which is the last kernel that worked flawlessly for me.

I get past the hardware detection stage and to the point where the CDROM
is mounted. It seems that now that the unified CDROM driver is being used
I can't get past the mount stage unless there is a CDROM in the drive..
otherwise I get hundreds of messages scrolling by saying that the drive
"is not ready". When I get past that, and to the point where the random
seed is being generated, it just hangs there and does not ever finish
booting.

Does anyone else have experience with this?
