Oops on GPM invocation without attached mouse

Today when I booted up I ran gpm as usual; unfortunately, I got a kernel
oops which then locked the machine hard. I rebooted and tried it again, and
got the same behavior. After a while I noticed that my PS/2 mouse had been
knocked out of the socket, and when I reattached it all was well. This
occurred with vanilla kernel 2.1.59. However, it did _not_ occur with
2.0.30; I just got "/dev/mouse: No such device".

I feel bad about not attaching the oops, but I know how everyone hates
oopsen without ksymoops output, and ksymoops has been giving me segfaults
(possibly to do with the use of iostreams). Instead, I just wanted to see
if this is a known issue with a known fix. In the meantime I'll try to get
ksymoops working, and hopefully post some details soon.

Thanks,
