irq2dev

I am trying to update the pcmcia-cs package to support the latest kernel
versions (2.1.6[0-1]). The code doesn't compile because it uses
irq2dev[], which was eliminated from these kernels. I've read the
patches, so I know what's going on.

Could someone summarize concisely for me the original purpose of irq2dev?
Can I simply remove all references to irq2dev from the pcmcia-cs modules
and expect them to work properly? Or are there more subtle interactions I
must take into account?

Thanks.
