If there are any lawyers out there, could they comment on recent additions
to EU law, that states if you sell a product, you must provide, on demand
complete documentation on how to use it & how it works to anyone that has
purchased it ? It was originally meant for clamping down on "authorised
mechanics" in the motor car industry. Some car manufacturers would only
sell manuals to people that were "authorised". And as with all company law,
the EU can fine a company for 10% of it's global turnover per year, for not
complying with competition laws (that's what Microsoft are facing).

This probably means that manufacturers selling products in Europe would
have to provide information to people that purchased the hardware, so
driver writing for the freeware OS'es wouldn't be as hard has it has been
in the past.
