cmd640+HD Maxtor

I post this question to you, after having posted to the it.comp.linux
italian newsgroup. An italian Linux guru told me to do so....

I experienced this problem:

Linux sees the hd correctly, I mean it recognizes the brand, model,
geometry and so on.
I succesfully partioned the hd and when trying
to create a fs (mke2fs -c /dev/hdc?) I get dozens of messages like

hdc: read_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
hdc: read_intr: error=0x40 {UncorrectableError}, LBAsect=..., sector=...

What does it mean? I also tried to format the hard disk with an MS-DOS
program by Maxtor (the original diskette included with the hd) and it
says something like

ECC ERROR

dozens of times.

I don't think these errors are caused by bad blocks because my cousin,
who used the disk until last week, never experienced problems (under
w95).

So, is it a problem with the hd itself, or with my buggy cmd640
controller?

Thank you in advance,
Enrico Cavalli <ebcavalli@iol.it>

P.S.: excuse my poor english...
