I've got smbfs partially running again under 2.1.54. I can copy and
delete a kernel source tree OK, but can't build it yet on a
smbfs-mounted volume. Seems to be a problem with getting the cwd.

I'll try to track this down tomorrow, and post a patch as soon as it's
useful.
