1) I haven't tried making my own tar file and gzipping it.
2) I will try to run strace... next chance I get
3) No, I cannot gunzip the tar file first, gunzip linux-2.0.30.tar.gz
locks too
4) the checksums are correct for the tar file.

and more over it doesn't always lock up at the same point in the tar
file.

the strace idea is a good one. I'm unfamiliar with strace and don't
really
know how to use it but I will try what you suggested with it.
