Problem within ext2 ?

Hello,
For some time I was downloading a lot of files from a site with wget,
and when I wanted to change a file on my HDD , surprize .. not enough
space left on device, though the df reports to have 70MB availabale.
Those file are rather small and many ( can that be a problem when
reportin the amount of free space? ). Anyway when I tried
to delete the files with mc I got the following error:
"No more virtual file handles"
The file system is "clean" .. I mean I have run e2fsck device -f.
My system is a PPro 200, 1.2GB HDD IDE, 64MB RAM. Distribution Slackware
3.2 , kernel 2.0.30.
