and 64Mb ram (swap?) ... maybe the system is really out of
swappable pages?

Let's say you have 40 tasks running, most of them are swapped out.
Only a few are running with really needed pages and therefore have
only fresh pages, buffers are really low, inode cache contains only
absolute necessary pages of the last read/write ...

Do you have tried 2.0.29 with such a bonnie run? Would be interesting
to know, what's happen.
