Because people think (and I can sympathise with this to some extent) that 2.0
would be the answer to all their problems, if only it included this one extra
patch. After all, if your application needs lots of fds, you might consider
it a bug if you're limited to 256.

Pressure for this sort of thing isn't going to go away. We just have to
resist it.
