Recognition of CDROM by the booot dsk.

I work with a kernel 1.3.72 which came with Redhat-2.0 over the net I
assume ( a friend of mine set this up for me!). For quite some time the
boot does not see the cdrom and thanks to the help of some of you, it
does now. Now I wanted to add some packages from a Slakware CD and just
out of curiosity and also since I wanted to install direct from the CD,
I made a Bootdsk.144 with all manner of choices of CD including idecd, aidecd
and none of these recognised the installed CD. This is not an SOS but I
was thinking: What would have happened if I decided to install Linux from
a CD? Would never have gotten off the first base. Note that this ideatapi
cd is recognised by my Linux now after I edited the config file , yes, with
help from some of you. Here is a question, what is going on? As I said this
is not urgent because I could mount the CD and install the packages from
there. Yet is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks.
Rao
