NFS is indeed not very reliable, but diskless machines who run with
root=/dev/nfs do work quite well. They need an NFS server to boot and
why can't they swap (through NFS or any protocol) ? If swap space
is located on the same server as /, downtime will not be affected
even if swap is over NFS.
The point is that diskless systems cannot swap in the current 2.0 and 2.1
kernels, although it is a desirable feature IMHO.
