But you have no chance to get the character set stuff right. The kernel simply
does'nt know which character set you use to display the messages. And you may
even have different character sets at different times:

At boot time you allways have the ibmpc (or however you call it) character set,
and later probably something else (I use latin1). With german messages you will
run a bit in trouble with the umlauts (äöü...), and with (for example) russian
you have no chance to get things right at boot time. You have no cyrillic
chars...

In userspace you this is no problem: you can allways pipe it throuth a tool like
recode.
