FM for writing device drivers?

I am trying to write a device driver for Linux. All of the
documentation I have references 1.2 and 2.0 kernels. So I tried to
write a 2.o driver for starters. I wrote a driver (as a module) and
when I load it (insmod) I get

__inbc_p, __inb_p, __outbc_p, __outb_p and bad_user_access_length

as undefined symbols. I found in io.h where these are generated from my
inb_p and outb_p calls. But I can't chase it any further.

I am using kernel 2.0.32 with modules 2.0.0.

I would also like pointers to documentation on how to write
drivers/modules for the 2.1 series kernels (after the big change, about
2.1.18).

Sorry if this is a lame one. Please, no flames:-)
