the following problem occurred after baking a modular 2.1.42:
cacofonix:/root # mount /dev/hdd /cdrom
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdd as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
cacofonix:/root # modprobe /lib/modules/2.1.42/block/ide-cd.o
cacofonix:/root # mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /cdrom
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdd as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
/usr/src/linux/.config:
#
# Loadable module support
#
CONFIG_MODULES=y
# CONFIG_MODVERSIONS is not set
CONFIG_KERNELD=y
...
#
# Floppy, IDE, and other block devices
#
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_FD=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y
...
#
# Please see Documentation/ide.txt for help/info on IDE drives
#
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_IDE is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=m
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_CMD640 is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RZ1000 is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_TRITON=y
# CONFIG_IDE_CHIPSETS is not set

CONFIG_ISO9660_FS=m
...
The ATAPI cdrom drive is secondary/slave and works fine with
kernel 2.0.29 with IDECD-option=yes (=in kernel).
Mainboard SOYO SY-5TF5.
