console buttons

Anyone know anything about the buttons (CD play, stop, etc) that are on
found on most PCs these days? I'm looking for either (1) previous work
done on fooling with them from Linux, or (2) technical details of how they
are supported under Win95, assuming it is pseudostandard. If not, I'll
settle for technical details for any PC, though would prefer Compaq.
