I've just had my socks knocked off by getting IP tunneling working
(so well!). It was just for experimentation today, but I have hopes of
using it for serious intercompany VPN in the future. It's presently
unencrypted of course, and I have my goverment to thank for that, I guess.
Anyway, I was tunneling between my 2.1.(was 29, now 32) box and one of my
2.0.29 work machines. It worked very well, indeed, although I have to
note that the README.tunnel is _sorely_ out of date. The method described
in it is unapplicable, and the file states that it's for kernel 1.1.x(!!).
It also says that only IPIP encapsulation is supported; is this still
true?
In any case, my main question is this: what are the hurdles
involved in authentication/encryption mechanisms being brought into the
linux tunnel implementation, diregarding the legal issues?
