Thank you all for your suggestions; it would appear that my init
process had hung somehow, which caused many zombies all over the
place, from many processes (most of which were sendmail).

Upon hard reboot (it wouldn't shutdown normally), e2fsck gagged on my
/var partition, in a major way. Some of the bad blocks were in
/var/log's logfiles; perhaps init had trouble there? After rebooting
with the repaired filesystem, no more zombies.
