A patch with the capabilities you mentioned, and more, was posted to the
list last week. It worked for me. Check on
ftp://ftp.csua.berkeley.edu/pub/cypherpunks/filesystems/linux/ . The
patch against Linux 2.1.22 wasn't there when I looked, though.
