Hello everybody,

My boss wants us to build a SMP machine fast, to be used
as an Oracle DB server.
We have several linuxes (several different kernels 2.0.20, 2.0.27 2.0.28)
running here with and without Oracle and they run just fine.
Now I need to know if my hardware will run and what kernel I do need
By the way I've read /usr/src/linux/Documentation (about everything)
and lots and lots /usr/doc and /usr/info so I'm unfamiliar with
linux or hardware, I just don't know enough for building this machine.

First
I want to use a Tyan dual Ppro MB
Tyan Triton PRO AT 1662D
a BUSLOGIC 958 UW scsi
2 UW SCSI disks 3.2 Gb brand not known yet
128 Mb RAM
3COM PCI 3c509 ethernet controller
2 Pentium Pro 200's 256 Kb cache
some VGA card (we are not going to use any graphics)
and of course some keyboard and monitor

What do I need to know:

What kernel should I be running, listening to the linux groups
I hear different things about SMP, 2.0.0 works or
everything above 2.0.14 doesnot, another article tells
me the guy is running 2.0.18.
Or put it differently what kernel should I NOT use?

What do I have to do so the kernel recognizes my SMP board
will a normal kernel with working SMP automatically do SMP
or do I have to change a SMP=1 line in the /usr/src/linux/Makefile?

Is there a difference between UW SCSI disks, and I mean
are there bad ones, that don't work right or can I use any brand?

I have a Debian distribution from july 96 with upgrades
from about october 96, and all patches 2.0 and 2.1
am I going to have trouble with this distribution should
I go RedHat or Slackware, I would think the kernel is
the most important and not the utilities?

Is my hardware list above ok, or do you think there are
better components, to get faster througput/performance?

Did I miss/forget anything?

Thanx
Roland
