I want to thank the fine people who took the time to answer this
question for me. To summarize to anyone else who might have had this
problem, what is happening is that kerneld is trying to load the IPX and
and Alletalk modules (net-pf-4 and 5). Because I didn't build them, they
cause depmod to generate the "Can't locate module" message (ad infinitum).
The workaround is to add the following lines to your /etc/modules.conf.
alias net-pf-4 off # Comment out IPX
alias net-pf-5 off # Comment out Appletalk
