Sound as a Module

I have a ESS 1686 sound card. Why does sound not work as a module. I have
tried "inmod sound" and this is the reply.

/lib/modules/2.1.21/misc/sound.o: couldn't find the kernel version the
module was compiled for

Why does this happen.
