I can't believe someone really makes such an effort. Rather I suppose
that just the card's NVRAM containing the Ethernet address has never
been initilalized at factory or been overwritten. I had this problem
with the RM200 which SNI generously loaned me for porting Linux/MIPS to.
Solution for that machine was to reprogram the EEPROM using a utility
available (but undocumented ...) in the firmware. A funny utility
because it allows you even to change serial numbers and more ...
