problems compiling 2.1.20

When I try to compile 2.1.20 with the 'set version information on all
symbols' option turned on, here's what I get:

gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2
-fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strength-reduce -pipe -m486 -malign-loops=2
-malign-jumps=2 -malign-functions=2 -DCPU=586 -DMODVERSIONS -DEXPORT_SYMTAB
-c ksyms.c
In file included from /usr/src/linux/include/linux/module.h:15,
from ksyms.c:12:
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/modversions.h:7: linux/modules/*.ver: No such
file or directory
make[2]: *** [ksyms.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory /usr/src/linux/kernel'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory /usr/src/linux/kernel'
make: *** [linuxsubdirs] Error 2

With it turned off, everything compiles fine. Is there a patch for this,
or will I have to wait until 2.1.21 to try out the new beta kernels? :)

Thanks..
