lockup with AWE32 and VC's

I am having a weird problem. If I play a sound file (using just cat
filename > /dev/audio) and switch to another VC my system locks up hard. no
oops, no keyboard light, nothing. This happened with kernels 2.0.26 and
2.1.16 (both with SMP). I have an AWE32 PnP soundboard. It happens with both
the OSS/lite and regular OSS. Anyone else experience this. It does not see
to occure if I stay in Xwindows. Thanks
