problems with 2.1 kernels, disk access and ppp

I was wondering if there has been some major changes in the network
drivers or the ide drivers for the cmd640 interface as I now find that
any sort of disk access while running a ppp transfer will stop the
transfer.

This is a pain especially as it didn't previously occur and means that
compiling while online is impossible.

system configuration

pci motherboard
amd486dx4/100
32meg memory
kernel 2.1.20
ppp compiled into the kernel
cmd640 ide interface with 2 drives
