OK,

It looks like the info is now in /proc/net/rt_local - So when can we
expect an updated 'netstat' and 'route' to get around the new kernel
behaviour ?

Not that I'm in a hurry - 2.1.x is meant to be bleeding edge, and I'm very
pleased with how my system is running.
