scrambled packets with PPP

I am running redhat linux 4.0 with kernel 2.0.27.
My ppp setup was working fine until about 3 weeks ago. Now, sometimes
when I connect to my provider, the link is dead. Linux says I'm
connected. Every packet that my system sends to my provider has a bad
crc. What could be causing this? My provider says it isn't their
problem. Is their a bug in the kernel or in ppp? I went through my ppp
configuration with the tech support person and they said it looked fine.
