"Most everyone has sendmail" - maybe, but why?
Rather than the security hole of the week, I'd install smail. It's good
enough for most situations, and it's far easier than sendmail (and of
course, it has far less security holes).
It's the default MTA for Debian, anyway.
(I've used it successfully for a situation I had thought I'd need sendmail
for - all I needed was a little script and sed, and smail did all the
rest. There's not much smail can't do.)
