X won't start under 2.1.14

I just built 2.1.14, using the patch to mkdep that was posted to this list
earlier today.

The kernel built just fine, but now, for the first time since I have gotten
this machine, I can't get my X server to start.

I don't have the error list in hand, but it was something to the effect of
"Not enough memory to run <high resolution 1024 x 768?>" then it bombs
out.

I'm virtually certain this is an artifact of the new kernel. Nothing is amiss
in any of the system log files. . . .
