aplying patches

I'm getting some strange results when aplying kernel patches, can someone
give me the correct procedure for aplying patches?
When I applied te kernel 2.1.6 patch, I got the following files in the
directory about the main linux source directory.
ChangeLog.awe
ChangeLog.awe.orig
README.awe
README.awe.orig
README.scc
README.scc.orig
awe_hw.h
awe_hw.h.orig
awe_voice.h
awe_voice.h.orig
awe_wave.c
awe_wave.c.orig
linux/
lowlevel.h
lowlevel.h.orig
scc.c
scc.c.orig
uaccess.h
uaccess.h.orig
Can someone explain this?
