Kernel compiling problems...

I just installed Slackware (3.1) about two weeks ago. It's been a nice
break from BSD, but I'm having some MAJOR problems trying to compile my
kernel. Every time I try to compile a kernel image, I get some kind of
fatal error. The sceen comes up with all kinds of nasty debugging info
(follows):

Oops: 0000
EIP: 0010:[<001034f0>]

The kernel version is 2.0.1 (although, I had the exact same problem
with 2.0.0). I tryed replacing my running kernel with a different
kernel image, and get the same problem. It seems this error shows up at
random places, but the debugging info is always the same EIP.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim
