2.0.17 hangs on boot

Kernel 2.0.17 hangs on boot time at the line: "Calibrating delay loop .."
This happens with or without APM support. If I undo the patch to
include/asm-i386/irq.h and then recompile, all is fine and my machine
boots up with no problem. I didn't run into anymore problems once the machine
was up and running.
I didn't have this problem with 2.0.16 and other previous 2.0 kernels.

Hardware: P90, 16MB, EIDE, no network cards
