The cmd640 isn't just on PCI, it's just autodetected on PCI. You can also
find it on VLB too, and you'll have to tell the kernel about it for the
kernel to make sure that errors are avoided. The RZ1000 can be
autodetected on PCI (I think it only appears on PCI), and there are
various other chips supported.

look at tune2fs, you can make the kernel remount the fs ro, or panic on
errors ;).
