PPP errors???

During long transfers, I will occasionally get periods of no Rx activity
from my ISP over my 28.8 modem. Whenever one of these pauses occurs, the
error count will go up according to ifconfig:

These errors occur often enough to take the transfer rate down
considerably below 2 K/s. I 'm beginning to wonder why I have a 28.8....

It's an external USR Sportster 28.8 connected to a serial card with
16550 UARTs.

Any ideas?
