xterm wierdness

Someone broke into my machine a couple of days ago and deleted a
whole buch of files causing my machine to be unusable ( that is a whole
other story, contact me if you want to help me nail this guy ) I have
slowly brought the machine back to life but when I go into X windows now I
am now unable to cut and paste in xterms... if someone could give me a
suggestion as to how to fix this . I will appreciate it a lot. thanks
