If you make an external cookie file, it might not be distributed with the
kernel. /proc/thanks shouldn't give "famous URLs, FAQ info" etc... but it
could give only "John Smith - Random Card driver - email"...
This way, credits are into the kernel.... without making it bigger (because
some credits already appears in the boot messages).
We could also create a fortune file which would be distributed with the
kernel, but not included in the binary form. Then, we add a
fortune /usr/src/linux/kernelcookie
in a rc file. Just remember that everybody doesn't have the kernel source
tree installed.
